A Feminist a Day: Boston Women’s Health Collective

Who are they?

Boston womenBoston Women’s Health Collective is a group of women who wrote the women’s health bible Our Bodies Our Selves. Twelve women who met a conference shared their experiences of dealing with doctors and decided to write a pamphlet, which sold for 35 cents in 1970. At the time there was little information around for women to access on topics like sex, the female body, abortion, post natal depression and pregnancy.

The book was published in 1973 and has since sold four million copies worldwide and recently celebrated its 40th birthday. It was one of the first books on women’s health that was written by women, for women, and focused on education and empowerment.

Why should we thank them?

Our Bodies Our Selves educated generations of women worldwide about their bodies and encouraged women to take control of their health. Today, the organisation delivers women’s health projects all over the world and the book has been translated into 30 languages.
