Who is she?
Gloria Steinem is a journalist, publisher and probably the most famous American feminist of the second wave (1960s and 70s). As a young journalist, she famously posed as a Playboy bunny to write a story that exposed the working conditions for women at the New York Playboy Club. In 1972, she co-founded Ms magazine and was the first woman to speak at the National Press Club.
Gloria has been a frequent political activist, protesting against the Vietnam and Gulf wars, and founded Choice USA, which lobbies for women’s reproductive rights.
Why should we thank her?
Gloria was a trailblazer in journalism – Ms magazine was a mag for women that wasn’t just about housekeeping tips and fashion. Without it, we probably wouldn’t have sites like Feministing or Jezebel today. She showed that women’s stories mattered.
She has also been a constant, vigilant voice in American politics, ensuring that women’s issues are kept firmly on the national agenda. She has kept the rage alive.
“The truth will set you free. But first it will piss you off.”
