A Feminist a Day: Oprah Winfrey

Who is she?

oprahOprah needs no introduction. She is a megastar media mogul and arguably the world’s most influential woman. She’s also in Australia right now. Hi, Oprah…

Starting out as a news anchor, she moved into daytime TV and The Oprah Winfrey Show became a worldwide sensation. She now has her own TV network.

Oprah has spoken out many issues, including her own sexual abuse, and she has inspired countless women to overcome barriers in their own lives. She has been a vocal advocate for women’s rights and for homosexual and transgender rights.

She also runs the Oprah Winfrey Leadership Academy for Girls in South Africa, which gives educational and leadership opportunities for academically gifted girls from impoverished backgrounds. Oprah has also given hundreds of millions to educational causes, including 400 scholarships to an Atlanta college.

Why should we thank her?

Oprah is an inspiration – she was born into poverty, but rose to become a billionaire and a powerful woman. She has always encouraged and supported women’s rights and puts her money where her mouth is, by funding the education of girls and young women.

Best quote

“I never did consider or call myself a feminist but I don’t think you can really be a woman in this world and not be.”
