Who is she?
Jessica Valenti is an American blogger and feminist writer, best known for being the founder of the Feministing blog in 2004.
She has also written several books on women’s issues, including The Purity Myth and Full Frontal Feminism. In 2011 The Guardian named Jessica one of their “top 100 women” for her work to bring the feminist movement online.
Jessica was working for the National Organisation for Women’s legal defence fund when she started Feministing. It started a ripple effect worldwide, leading to the creation of other feminist websites, blogs and online groups. Naturally, being one of the first, the site attracted the full force of the backlash that normally comes with such advances for women – the site attracted online abuse and even threats of rape and death.
Why should we thank her?
Jessica has been called a “pioneer of modern feminism” and without Feministing, there may not have been the many great websites and blogs we see today, like the very cool Jezebel.
“It seems the word ‘slut’ can be applied to any activity that doesn’t include knitting, praying, or sitting perfectly still lest any sudden movements be deemed whorish.”
